A free Northwoods respite camp in Lake Tomahawk run by the American Legion Department of Wisconsin, with accessible cabins, dining, recreation and physical therapy facilities. Open to Wisconsin residents who are honorably discharged veterans or currently serving members of any branch, along with their spouses or partners and children 18 and under, and to families of the fallen. Free weeklong overnight summer camp for children ages 7-17 who have lost a parent, sibling or primary caregiver who served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Trauma-informed grief programming is combined with normal camp activities at Turning Rivers in Campbellsport, Wisconsin, and about 200 children attend each year; the camp is free to families and is American Camping Association accredited. Running since 2013, it is now a program of the Grafton-based nonprofit Power of Humans; no phone is published, so contact is by email at [email protected].

A free place for the family of a service member, retiree or veteran to stay while their loved one is getting inpatient or extended outpatient care at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center on Fort Hood.
