Waterloo nonprofit running three veteran programs: two transitional homes for veterans experiencing homelessness, donated furniture and household goods for veterans moving into unfurnished housing, and home accessibility modifications such as ramps and grab bars. Furniture and housing are referral-based — partner agencies including Black Hawk County Veterans Affairs and HACAP confirm veteran status and refer; the furniture and household items are free. Home modifications start with an assessment by a certified access consultant and are typically paid through VA grant programs rather than provided outright. A walk-in Veterans Resource Center is open Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm, serving the Waterloo and Cedar Valley area.

Community action agency for south-central North Dakota that delivers the VA's Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program: case management, help applying for VA benefits, and direct financial assistance to secure or keep housing for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. SSVF is VA-funded and free to eligible low-income veteran households; the same office also runs a food pantry, energy assistance, weatherization, a clothing closet and a HOME-ARP housing-stability program for income-qualified residents. Serves Burleigh, Emmons, Grant, Kidder, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Oliver, Sheridan and Sioux counties.

Local affiliate that repairs and modifies homes so income-qualifying owners can stay in them safely, using volunteers and contractors: grab bars, ramps, non-slip flooring, roofs, windows, water heaters and HVAC. Veterans are named as one of the groups it serves, alongside older adults, people with disabilities and income-qualifying families; to qualify you must own the home (not a mobile or trailer home), be current on property taxes and have household income at or below 80% of area median income. Covers Cass, Traill and Richland counties in North Dakota plus Clay County, Minnesota, and completed 105 repairs on 42 homes in 2025; apply online or call for a paper application. Cornerstone Rescue Mission runs the VA-funded SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) program out of offices in Rapid City and Sioux Falls (1700 W. Russell St. #502), providing homelessness prevention and rapid re-housing: rent and utility assistance, security deposits, transportation, childcare, case management and help navigating veteran benefits. Services are free; eligibility requires a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable, household income under 80% of the county area median, and being homeless or at risk of homelessness. The same nonprofit also operates emergency shelter, a community kitchen, apartments and a medical respite center in Rapid City. SSVF offices are open Mon-Thu 8:00-4:30 and Fri 8:00-4:00.
Pine Ridge SD · housing assistance
Oglala Lakota Housing Authority is the tribal housing entity for the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, managing roughly 1,130 affordable rental units plus tenant services and homeownership programs. Its veterans page offers HUD-VASH Choice Voucher rental assistance and posts a downloadable application; it is for tribal member veterans and there is no cost to apply. The posted application form is dated 2023, so call the main office to confirm the program is currently taking applications.
Sioux Falls SD · housing assistance
A two-acre village in northwest Sioux Falls with 25 furnished 240-square-foot transitional tiny homes, where veterans experiencing homelessness live while working one-on-one with on-site case managers toward permanent housing. The Village Center also runs an Outreach Center serving veterans across the Sioux Falls area with housing assistance, physical and mental health support, education and career navigation, and the SSG Fox suicide prevention program. Open to anyone who served regardless of discharge status, length of service, or type of service; the site does not post a cost, so ask when you call.

A free drop-in day center for veterans and their families in Rapid City, open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It offers showers, laundry, hygiene supplies, coffee and snacks, a mail and message center, phone and computer access, a day room and peer support groups. On-site VA case managers help connect veterans to housing, employment and health care, and the site also runs Homeless Veteran Reintegration Program employment services and housing retention support.
Union Grove WI · housing assistance
Wisconsin nonprofit that provides emergency shelter for homeless veterans and a "Fresh Start" program placing veterans in temporary housing and then helping them secure furnished permanent housing at no cost. Also runs a food pantry and hygiene-supply program, a vehicle repair and donation program, and a farm site offering gardening, equine therapy and woodworking programs. Services to veterans are free, funded by the organization's Main Street thrift store and donations; call the office to ask about availability.

Programs include community outreach, case management, an emergency food pantry (Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri 9am-3:30pm, closed Tuesdays), Furnishings for Heroes household goods and furniture, Bikes for Stripes bicycles for transportation, and WOVIN, a women veterans health and wellness network. Owns and operates a veteran apartment community in Appleton, renting one-, two- and three-bedroom units at below-market rent (published at $720, $805 and $885 a month, with heat, water and basic cable/internet included) to veterans, Guard, Reserve and active-duty members and their families. This is permanent affordable rental housing, not free housing; you apply through the online rental application, staff screen income and background and help residents line up benefits and other income, and there is a long waiting list. The on-site community center also hosts open AA meetings, veterans groups and a weekly guitar program, and serves as meeting space for other nonprofits. Service area is primarily Outagamie, Brown, Waupaca, Winnebago and Calumet counties.

Churches United operates Micah's Mission, the emergency shelter and community center at 1901 1st Ave N in Moorhead; its own site says the shelter serves men, women, families and veterans in the Fargo-Moorhead area, with on-site case management and hot meals twice daily. It also runs two permanent housing properties in Moorhead: Bright Sky Apartments (43 units) and Silver Linings Apartments (36 units of permanent supportive housing for people 55+ who are chronically homeless and very low income). Fargo's public housing authority, operating since 1976; it administers Housing Choice Vouchers, public housing, tax-credit/multifamily units, and homelessness referrals through the CARES system for income-qualified households. Office hours are Mon-Thu 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m., Fri 8 a.m.-noon. Its own site does not describe a veteran-specific or HUD-VASH program, so a veteran who is homeless or at risk should also contact the Fargo VA Health Care System's homeless veteran services.

It is part of the Fargo VA health care system, which serves eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota.
