After the pandemic ruled out its former hosts in Seattle and British Columbia, the Coast Guard moved its joint-service Cold Water Ice Diving course, which it has run since a fatal 2006 accident, to Camp Ripley, where it will stay. This year 12 Coast Guard, two Navy and two Army divers practiced in a Brainerd dive tank, then cut holes in frozen Ferrell Lake for 20-minute dives in 35-degree water. A student spoke about layered gear, equipment failures in extreme cold and the divers' tight bonds.

USA Cares Top Golf Fundraiser

LockLeed was honored to be the Title Sponsor for this great event on May 25th. USA Cares was launched through a grassroots partnership between WAVE-3 TV in Louisville, KY, the Mid-South Division of Kroger Food Stores, and the Association of the United States Army Fort Knox Chapter. The organization was dubbed Kentuckiana Cares, with a goal to raise funds to help military families in financial crises through the sale of “Support Our Troops” yard signs. In October 2003, in response to the increasing number of requests for assistance, Kentuckiana Cares evolved into what is now USA Cares, a 501(c)(3) national non-profit organization that has assisted thousands of veterans and military families facing hardships related to service.

Memorial Day grew out of the Civil War, whose huge death toll moved towns to honor the fallen: women in Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, decorated soldiers' graves in 1864, and Carbondale, Illinois, held a veterans' march where Major General John A. Logan spoke. Congress credited Waterloo, New York, which began a yearly service in 1866, as the birthplace. In 1868 Logan, leading the Grand Army of the Republic, set aside May 30 for decorating graves. Long called Decoration Day, the holiday got its current name in federal law in 1967.

Every Third Saturday and The Hands Foundation have opened offices and a coffee shop for veterans at 4303 54th Street East in Minneapolis, the result of years of work. The center gives veterans and their families somewhere to get help with the problems of returning to civilian life and to meet other veterans, and it will serve as a lasting supply point for homeless veterans.
