United States Air Force Academy at a glance

The United States Air Force Academy is a service academy at the foot of the Rocky Mountains northwest of Colorado Springs. Its mission is to develop leaders of character for the Air Force and Space Force. The cadet program combines four areas: academics, military training, athletics and character development. This makes the Academy an educational institution with a military commissioning purpose, rather than a conventional operational air base.

President Dwight Eisenhower signed the legislation establishing the Academy in 1954, and its first class began in 1955 before the permanent campus was completed. Women entered the cadet wing in 1976 and graduated with the class of 1980. The cadet area received National Historic Landmark designation in 2004.
