Fort Benning at a glance

Fort Benning is the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence in the Columbus region of Georgia. The center trains soldiers and leaders for combat, develops maneuver doctrine and capabilities, and supports the community that makes that work possible. Its training identity reaches beyond a single school, encompassing infantry, armor, cavalry, airborne, Ranger and officer candidate development.

The installation began training infantry in 1918 and subsequently expanded its educational responsibilities. The current name honors Corporal Fred G. Benning for his actions during World War I. Local life is often described through the Tri-Community of Columbus and Fort Benning in Georgia and Phenix City in Alabama. Training students and permanent personnel therefore share a military environment connected to communities in two states.
