White Sands Missile Range at a glance

White Sands Missile Range is a major military test installation in south-central New Mexico. Its mission includes developmental and operational testing, evaluation and training for emerging technologies. Army, other military service, federal, commercial and international customers use its capabilities. The work follows systems from a customer's testing requirement through measured trials and analysis that informs equipment and future force decisions.

The range's history is tied to the first atomic bomb test in 1945 and the subsequent development of missile and space testing. Its public overview describes environmental, structural and performance testing as well as missile trials. The headquarters community is in the Tularosa Basin near the Organ Mountains, east of Las Cruces. The surrounding range is much larger than that developed headquarters and residential area.
