Minnesota Bases, Answered

How many military installations are in Minnesota?

The Defense Department's MIRTA dataset (FY 2024 data, release notes dated September 2, 2025) lists 10 sites in Minnesota: seven Army National Guard sites, one Air National Guard site, one Air Force Reserve site and one U.S. Army site. MIRTA is not a full inventory: DISDI notes that many National Guard and Reserve sites are left out because of their small size or other criteria, so Minnesota has more armories and reserve centers than this list shows.

Does Minnesota have an active-duty military base?

Not in MIRTA's Minnesota list. Every site but one is reported by the National Guard or the Air Force Reserve. The exception, reported by the Army itself, is the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills, which MIRTA lists as semi-active; the EPA reports that its production ended in 2005.

Why isn't Fort Snelling on the list?

MIRTA only considers sites reported in the Defense Department's Base Structure Report (or on a map published under the FIRRMA real estate rules), and it leaves out many Guard and Reserve sites because of their small size or other criteria. Fort Snelling does not appear in its Minnesota list, but LockLeed has a transition guide for the people who serve there.
