Fort Polk at a glance

Fort Polk is the Louisiana home of the Joint Readiness Training Center. The center trains brigade combat teams and security force assistance formations for demanding operations against a capable opposing force. Its mission combines realistic exercises with the installation services needed to support readiness, globally deployable forces and the soldiers and families who live at the post.

The installation lies in the pine country of west-central Louisiana near Leesville in Vernon Parish. DeRidder, in neighboring Beauregard Parish, is another nearby community. The post's training history grew from the Louisiana Maneuvers before World War II. It was called Fort Johnson from 2023 until June 2025, when Fort Polk became its name again, this time honoring General James H. Polk.

Before you arrive

Planning for this location

A JRTC training rotation and a permanent Fort Polk assignment are distinct uses of the same installation.

Use these questions with your sponsor or gaining organization. They are a starting point for planning, including assignments, courses and training periods that differ from a routine permanent change of station.

  1. Confirm the organization, duration and reporting instructions shown on your orders. Ask which office handles your arrival.
  2. Clarify lodging and housing arrangements before booking. Ask about availability, required approvals and how to handle a late arrival.
  3. Before choosing a home, compare the commute, lease terms, school needs and your household budget. Ask the housing office about the options that apply to your situation.
  4. Coordinate household goods and personal travel with the appropriate transportation office. Keep orders, receipts and important family records together.
  5. Make a short list of contacts for medical care, schools, childcare and family support, where applicable to your assignment.
