Fort Irwin at a glance

Fort Irwin is the home of the National Training Center in California's High Mojave Desert. Its mission is realistic joint and combined arms training for soldiers, leaders and units. The center also uses experience from that training to inform doctrine, equipment and force development. A permanent support community therefore works alongside formations that come to the installation for training rotations.

The location began as the Mojave Anti-Aircraft Gunnery Range in 1940 and later became an armor and desert training center. It received the Fort Irwin designation in 1961 and the National Training Center designation in 1981. The post lies northeast of Barstow, surrounded by desert hills and mountains. Its resident community and visiting rotational forces are different populations with different reasons for being at the same installation.

Before you arrive

Planning for this location

A temporary National Training Center rotation is different from a permanent Fort Irwin assignment.

Use these questions with your sponsor or gaining organization. They are a starting point for planning, including assignments, courses and training periods that differ from a routine permanent change of station.

  1. Confirm the organization, duration and reporting instructions shown on your orders. Ask which office handles your arrival.
  2. Clarify lodging and housing arrangements before booking. Ask about availability, required approvals and how to handle a late arrival.
  3. Before choosing a home, compare the commute, lease terms, school needs and your household budget. Ask the housing office about the options that apply to your situation.
  4. Coordinate household goods and personal travel with the appropriate transportation office. Keep orders, receipts and important family records together.
  5. Make a short list of contacts for medical care, schools, childcare and family support, where applicable to your assignment.
