Aberdeen Proving Ground at a glance

Aberdeen Proving Ground is an Army research, development, test and evaluation installation in Maryland. Its organizations work on military equipment ranging from ground systems and soldier protection to communications and chemical and biological defense. Test support includes instrumentation, technical services, fabrication, facility operations and both real and simulated testing, bringing military personnel together with scientists, engineers and technical specialists.

The proving ground was established in 1917 as the Army sought expanded facilities to test wartime munitions. Edgewood Arsenal merged with it in 1971, creating the shared Aberdeen Proving Ground identity for both areas. Later realignments expanded its communications and intelligence technology role. The surrounding Aberdeen community is in Harford County on the Chesapeake Bay side of Maryland, along the corridor between Baltimore and northeastern cities.
